From guest blogger Chris Robanske: Canadian Snowboardcross Athlete, Olympian, National Team Athlete, World Cup Winner, World Championships Medalist
While most of my year is spent traveling the globe in search of snow and Snowboard Cross venues, the summer provides time to embrace an adventure closer to home. One of my favourite locations is Tofino, B.C, Canada. Located on the west coast of Vancouver Island, Tofino has practically established itself as the surfing capital of Canada. A thriving town and unbeatable location, Tofino is a must-do for any adventure seeker.
Here are my top 5 favourite things to do in Tofino:
Go for a surf!
Tofino offers some of Canada’s best surfing. The water is cold, so you will want to track down a good wetsuit and keep moving in the water. Some of my favourite beaches are Cox Bay and Long Beach. Be sure to be careful in Cox Bay, a strong rip tide might catch you off guard.
After a surf my favourite thing to do is make a fire on the beach. There is no better way to stay warm and enjoy the sunset.
Maybe surfing isn’t your thing, or the waves are not in your favour? Well than Tofino can offer you some of the best sightseeing on the West Coast. The best way to embrace this vast landscape is to hire a floatplane or helicopter.
One of the best locations to visit within the area is Hot Springs Island. While the name might lead you to believe it’s an island, this natural hot spring is actually located on the main island but is not accessible by land. Ask your pilot before the flight if they can drop you off at Hot Springs Island and enjoy a magical 30-minute board walk through the old-growth forest to the natural hot springs.
Fishing or Whale Watching!
Another excellent way to see all that Tofino has to offer is to be out on the water. Whether you are fishing or whale watching, you will feel the true presence of the Pacific Ocean. If you’re lucky enough, you may even see some Orca’s!
Go for a hike!
The West Coast offers many hiking options for every level. There are many small hikes around town that will bring you to beautiful oceanside inlets and bays.
For something more adventurous head to the Casno plane crash. This short 5km hike will bring you to the crash site of the 1942 Royal Canadian Air Force crash site.
If hiking is your thing you should consider the West Coast Trail. This multi-day, bucket-list hike is the most challenging and beyond breathtaking.
Any trip to Tofino is not complete without a stop at the best local taco truck. Tacofino is an old orange converted school bus that is located in the back of the parking lot near Live to Surf. This is a must stop for any hungry adventure seeker!
No matter what kind of adventure you are looking for, Tofino has the ability to keep even the most thrill-seeking entertained!
